the relation back of amendments to the date of the original pleading; also: the legal fiction that an action (as the filing of a document) was taken on a previous date to avoid the expiration of a time limit

A principle in which some action is held to have occurred earlier than it did in fact occur; e.g., an amended complaint is still held to have been filed at the time of the original complaint for purposes of the statute of limitations.
