junk bond
A type of bond with a "BB" (Standard & Poor's) or "Ba" (Moody's) rating or lower indicating that there is a higher-than-average risk that the issuing company will default on the bond. Also known as high-yield or speculative bonds, because of their high risk, junk bonds pay high dividends when there is not a default.
