senior debt
A phrase used to describe secured medium or long term bank debt provided to a company, often as part of a finance package also including mezzanine finance and development capital. Its seniority means it ranks ahead of other finance in terms of security.

senior debt
Debt that is not subordinated. For example, a loan (from a single bank or a syndicated loan) that is intended to rank ahead of other unsecured and unsubordinated debt on the insolvency of the borrower.

In bankruptcy proceedings, senior debt must be repaid before other creditors receive any payments. Senior debt is often secured by collateral in which the lender has first priority lien.
