virus
n.
A computer program that can copy itself and install itself onto a computer without help from or the knowledge of the computer’s owner or user.

The Essential Law Dictionary. — Sphinx Publishing, An imprint of Sourcebooks, Inc. . 2008.

virus
A small computer program introduced into a system deliberately (and invariably with malicious or imbecilic intent) which carries out a useless and/or destructive function such as displaying an irritating message or systematically over-writing the information on the user's hard disk. Viruses attach themselves to other programs (that is, "infect" them) and are spread by contact between an infected program and an uninfected program, for example, when a floppy disk containing an infected program is inserted in a PC or when an infected program is downloaded over the internet.
