ARRA

arra
in Roman law, a payment that could be forfeit to escape from a contract before it was concluded in writing or that, on another view of the law, could be paid to escape from any sale. Arra was often more than half the value of the property in question. The modern Anglo-American equivalent is payment of a deposit.
