Claim of Right

claim of right
n.
(1) In property, the claim that someone in adverse possession of land intends to claim the land as his or her own.
(2) In taxation, the requirement that a taxpayer report all income for the year, even if some of it might have to be repaid in a later year.

Claim of Right
the Scottish counterpart of the English Declaration of Right of 1689, to the effect that James VII of Scotland (and II of England) had forfeited his right to the throne (which was then offered to William and Mary). See bill of rights.
