fisheries policy

fisheries policy
in the law of the European Communities, the policy regulating fishing. A recent initiative, 'Blue Europe', provides for equality of access to resources in the Community outside a 12-mile limit, a conservation regime, market support, and modernisation and development. One of the key concepts is the total allowable catch, or TAC. It is of the essence of the conservation measures and attempts to ensure that over-fishing does not occur. It does so by specifying fishing times and mesh sizes. There is an inspection force.
