derivative tort
n.
(1) A civil action in tort based on an injury caused by criminal conduct by the defendant, in which the plaintiff seeks compensation for the injury, independent of a criminal action brought for the same offense.
(2) Tort liability imposed on a principal for a wrong done by his or her agent.
