There is a distinction between someone who works full time for a company on an exclusive basis (as an employee) and someone who is engaged occasionally to assist or provide advice but who provides similar services to a range of businesses (consultant). Often the distinction is blurred for example in the case of non-executive directors or sales agents. The Inland Revenue will be quick to scrutinise any "border-line" relationships.
