The federal agency created to administer the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 (as amended) and the Securities Act of 1933 (as amended) and later given authority to administer the Investment Company Act of 1940 and the Investment Advisers Act of 1940. The statutes administered by the SEC are designed to promote full public disclosure and protect the investing public against fraudulent and manipulative practices in the securities markets.

The federal administrative agency established by the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, in order to supervise and regulate the issuing and trading of securities and to eliminate fraudulent or unfair practices.
