Planning authorities and National Park authorities can serve a BPN on the owner of a building which is not listed, but which is of special architectural or historic interest and is in danger of demolition or adverse alteration.For a period of six months after service of the BPN, the building is subject to the same rules as if it were listed. Having served a BNP the planning authority usually notifies the Secretary of State, and requests that the building is considered for listing. The Secretary of State must decide within six months whether to list the building. If it is not listed, compensation may be payable if loss has been sustained as a result of the BPN.
