second generation (2G)The generation of mobile telephone services using digital technology which followed the original analogue mobile telephones (known as "1G" or first generation). Currently, this is still the most widely-used technology in Europe. Data transmission rates over 2G are low, at around 9.6kbps (9,600 bits of data per second).
