Standard & Poor's 500 index (S&P 500)
A share index which consists of a representative sample of 500 of the most widely held US based common stocks, chosen by the S&P Index Committee for market size, liquidity, and sector. It is a market-value weighted index - each stock's weight in the index is proportionate to its market value. The S&P 500 is one of the most commonly used benchmarks for the overall US stock market.
