agricultural holding

agricultural holding
a tenancy of agricultural land. A statutory system of protected leasehold tenure for agricultural land is provided by the Agricultural Holdings Act 1986 and in Scotland by the Agricultural Holdings (Scotland) Act 1949 (as amended). Tenants have a limited security of tenure, and there is a procedure to fix rents by arbitration if the parties cannot agree. The landlord normally has to give at least one year's notice to quit, and the tenant can usually appeal to the Agricultural Lands Tribunal to determine whether the notice should operate. On the death or retirement of the tenant, his spouse or other close relative can, in certain defined circumstances, succeed to the tenancy.
