examination in chief

examination in chief
in court practice, the part of the case, whether civil or criminal, in which a party elicits from a witness his own case. Thus, the prosecution may examine the investigating police officers in chief to attempt to prove the case against the accused. Leading questions (See leading question) (those that suggest their own answer) should be avoided in examination in chief. In England, the court may allow leading questions if the court permits the witness to be treated as hostile. See cross-examination.
