2007 Lugano Convention

Convention on jurisdiction and the enforcement of judgments in civil and commercial matters signed in Lugano on 30 October 2007 and published in the Official Journal on 21 December 2007, (L339/3). Its effects are materially the same as the Brussels Regulation and it governs issues of jurisdiction between the European Union member states and the European Free Trade Association countries other than Liechtenstein (namely Iceland, Switzerland and Norway). The Swiss Federal Council is the official depository for the 2007 Lugano Convention and information on its ratification can be checked on its website.
The EC ratified the 2007 Lugano Convention on 18 May 2009 with effect for all member states except Denmark. The 2007 Lugano Convention was ratified by Norway on 1 July 2009 and by Denmark on 24 September, 2009 and it enters into force as between the European Union member states and Norway on 1 January 2010. The ratifications by Switzerland and Iceland are outstanding. The Swiss ratification procedure has commenced, and subject to a possible referendum, the 2007 Lugano Convention is expected to enter into force in respect of Switzerland on 1 January 2011.
